The Medina Teachers Association, the Medina School District, and the Medina Area Partnership are proud to announce the October selections for Students of the Month.  This award is a combined effort of these organizations to recognize wtudents who go above and beyond to help teachers and fellow students succeed and enjoy school.

Medina FFA has graciously sponsored the award for October.  This month, students are being honored with this article and a yard sign from the MTA to celebrate their achievement. The yard sign was presented by Joseph Byrne, President of the Medina Teachers’ Association.  Mrs. Schiavone also presented the winners with a pen and pencil set from the school district.  In addition, Medina FFA  presented each of this month’s winners a gift bag full of goodies!

Nominated by Allison Woodburn at  Oak Orchard Primary School was Sophie Trapasso.  Mrs. Woodburn shared the following about Sophie. She is a wonderful example of what it means to follow our Mustang Mission. Each and every day she shows responsibility, respect, honesty, kindness, and makes safe choices. She carries these qualities with her throughout the school day, whether she is working on her own, learning in a group, or playing with her classmates. She demonstrates outstanding character in all areas, including in the classroom, on the playground, in specials, and in the cafeteria. Sophie is a true role model for her peers. She always tries her very best on every assignment and puts great effort into completing her work with care and pride. She listens attentively during lessons, stays focused on what is being taught, and asks thoughtful questions when she comes across something that is challenging. In addition to her strong academic habits, Sophie shines as a member of her classroom family. She is eager to lend a helping hand and is quick to step in if she notices someone who could use support. She cares deeply about her classmates and goes out of her way to make others feel included and valued. Sophie cheers up her friends when they are sad, and she shares kind words and compliments to make her peers smile. Sophie demonstrates leadership in quiet but powerful ways. She leads by example with her positive attitude, her willingness to help, and her respectful behavior. She inspires her classmates to make good choices, to work hard, and to treat others with kindness. Sophie is the type of student who lifts up the people around her, making the classroom a more positive and welcoming place for everyone. Sophie is a leader, a caring friend, and a wonderful student who represents the very best of our Mustang Mission.

From Wise Middle School, Jason Klein nominated one of his fifth-grade students, Major. When Mr.  Klein indicated his reasons for nominating Major, he shared that from the very first days of school, Major has stood out as a bright, articulate, and exceptionally driven student. His curiosity knows no bounds—whether he’s reading a book, asking thoughtful questions, or diving deep into research, Major is constantly seeking to expand his knowledge. Major has a natural talent for learning and a clear passion for science, especially in his aspirations to one day become a paleontologist or geneticist. What sets him apart is not just his intelligence, but his ability to reflect on his learning, advocate for himself, and seek out opportunities to grow. He exemplifies what it means to be a self-advocate and a critical thinker. He communicates exceptionally well with both his peers and adults, making him a strong communicator and an effective collaborator in any setting. Major also demonstrates a deep sense of fairness, empathy, and responsibility—qualities that define him as a respectful and thoughtful citizen of our classroom community.  Even though the school year has just begun, I’m genuinely excited to work with Major each day and to support him on his educational journey. He embodies the core values of our Portrait of a Graduate, that we strive to instill in every student: self-advocacy, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and citizenship.

From the Junior-Senior High School, Cassidy Janas, a junior, was nominated by Mr. Bell and Mr. Giacomini.  Mr. Giacomini reports that Cassidy comes into the classroom with a positive attitude each day and is ready to learn. She is a magnificent contributor to class discussions, and she is not afraid to ask the necessary questions to reinforce her understanding of a difficult concept. Additionally, she collaborates well with her peers and is willing to go the extra mile to help out a struggling classmate. Her effervescent personality and commitment to learning makes it easy to nominate her for student of the month.  Mr. Bell also shared that Cassidy chose to challenge herself this year by taking AP US History and is doing very well in a very difficult course. She is displaying all of the attributes in my class that Mr. Giacomini spoke to.

Congratulations to this month’s winners! The MTA, MCSD, and the MAP will continue the student of the month program throughout the school year. Be on the lookout for the next honorees in the coming months. Look for posters in the windows of Medina businesses identifying them as proud supporters of this program. Who will be the next outstanding Medina student to be honored???
